Relay for Life

Each year, our town hosts a Relay for Life

for the American Cancer Society.

It's a great community event, for a great cause.

It's held in one of the town parks.

Middletown Relay for Life

Heidi and I have been on the local committee

for several years, and our job has been

the Luminary Tent. Family and friends and neighbors

all come down to volunteer for the event.

Here are a few pictures from this years' event.

Here we are soon after we arrived, to set up for the event.

This is our local Relay for Life 10th anniversary.

It has rained for some or all of the event

almost every year.

Yep, it's raining. Here, some of the relay 'teams'

are setting up their campsites.

It rained in the afternoon and actually quit

during the important parts of the program.

It is usually real hot and muggy, but this year

people were wearing sweatshirts and long pants.

We sell memory/honor bags (like a paper lunch sack)

to line the track

with candles in them that are lit during a special ceremony.

Last year we began also selling tiki torches.

You can see some in the foreground of this picture.

After people get their bags,

they decorate them with markers,

photos, and whatever they want.

They use these tables to work on their bags.

Then we put sand in them to weigh them down.

After that, they are lined up on the

track and a candle put in them.
